Skhizen - by Jeremy Clapin

Why Draw?

As we approach the middle of the semester in the Drawing for Animators class I've decided to stretch the students into thinking critically about the reasons they are pursuing this intensive, grueling, demanding artistic medium.  I stumbled across this beautiful write up about why this particular artist draws.  Have a read.

"The Juggler of Our Lady" - R.O. Blechman

This is one of the strangest Terrytoons that was ever made.    It was created during the brief period of 1955-58 when Paul Terry suddenly sold the studio to CBS and Gene Deitch was hired as the new art director.  He in turn hired a bunch of young blood to take the studio in new directions.  One of these outcomes was this fantastic little short that originated as a book written by a sophomore R. O. Blechman who also designed the work.  Animated by Al Kouzel and Produced by Bill Weiss, this UPA-esque short is part of a brief but brilliant point in the long and influential Terrytoons legacy.

Bento Bestiary - Ben Newman & Scott Donaldson

I just received my copy of the Bento Bestiary in the mail from Nobrow Press.  These modern spins on 18th Century Toriyama Sekien's far east mythological monsters are beautifully drawn and amazingly printed in an all too cute hardback book.  The back stories are written with clever prose and humorous wit.  Plus I've been a fan of Ben Newman since I bought his short visual comic Ouroboros last year. Great stuff!
