Flip-books by Stefan Gruber

Here is a compilation of some very beautifully animated flip-books by Seattle based animator Stefan Gruber. I love the fluidity of his work and his caring personality. I have had the pleasure of making Mr. Gruber's acquaintance on one of his cross country backyard animation shows and if you havn't been to one, you should most definitely look it up.

The Gloaming

This short by Nobrain looks super intense! I really enjoy the integration of mediums that they use. I can't wait to see the whole thing.

Again with the drawing

I'm currently working on a series using this technique. I have yet to decide the scope of the project, but it's a fun activity to occupy my time.

Das Racist - Who's That? Brooown!

It made me smile.

Flying Lotus - Kill your Co-Workers

What an amazing music video by Beeple for Flying Lotus! "In an open invitation to animators across the world to make new scenes and stories with the parade of fantastical characters that feature, the source 3D models have been made freely available for you to download and use in your own works." - Taken from the Flying Lotus website

Here are the links to the source files and the vimeo group.

I just might participate in this myself. :)

Water

The Great Lakes Water Situation

I was totally unaware of so much about the great lakes water supply. My thanks to the NFB for setting up this website.

Un Tour De Manege

Of course, another beautiful film from Gobelins. There's not much else to say about this film other than to express my awe at the jaw dropping visuals and the beautifully told, simplistic story.

Here are links to the creators blogs.

Jeff Soto

I have had a great affinity for Jeff Soto's work for some time now. I love the way he realistically renders what seem like doodles and sketch creations. His work is so whimsical and colorful but with a rustic dirty look to contrast it.

JP Morgan Chase spot

Here's an awesome little commercial for JP Morgan Chase. Created by the commercial monster Psyop. Their work is always extremely imaginative and beautiful.

New Website!

Yesterday, thanks to one of my new LA friends Eggay Gonda, I discovered a website that allows you to make a free flash website. Seeing as how I had given up all hope on my Wordpress hosted website, this seemed like a pretty sweet deal. Wix allows you some pretty awesome freedom when designing your website but there are some downsides. The URL must be www.wix.com/YourAccount/WhateverYourSiteIs and they put an add bar across the bottom of the site. Of course they do offer an option to buy your own URL and use them for hosting but the free side is still a great way to get a real nice looking, simplistic website off the ground before you put any serious cash into it.

Rango

I am super excited for this new film 'Rango', directed by Gore Verbinski, due out March 4th. It looks entertaining, fun and gritty. Not to mention that Johnny Depp is the main character, who just so happens to be one of my favorite actors. This movie looks well put together, by people who know what they're doing. Kudos.

Knowledge

I have always enjoyed browsing the vast amount of information on Wikipedia but this video helped me learn just a little more about Wikipedia itself, not to mention that the motion graphics are beautifully compiled.

Fuggy Fuggy

The Brothers McLeod have been making a lot of awesome work over the years. Fuggy Fuggy is quickly becoming my favorite.

El Rey del Mambo y la Reina de Saba - Klaus & Kinski

This is a beautiful music video made by Nacho Rodríguez, Gina Thorstensen and Emma Kidd. I am amazed that they used flash at all in the process of creating this film. The animation looks so far off from what I'm used to seeing come out of that program that I am getting ready to hop back on it and see what it can do.

Sometimes I draw things

I've been doing a lot of coffee shop sketch-booking and here are some of my favorite pages.

I have actually been considering doing some large scale flat-work like this, using text and my quasi horror vacui style. Or even possibly an animation that incorporates it.

I have also been getting more into watercolor.

Sleigh Bells

So, one of my new favorite bands is Sleigh Bells. It's loud, house party music that is designed to sound like your speakers are blown out. Plus Alexis Krauss, the lead singer, is one fine lookin lady.

A little late is better than a little never

I know that this aired a couple of weeks ago, but I just saw it today and it blew my mind! I can't believe that they actually did the entire episode in stop-motion. You must watch this while it's still available on hulu.

Squirrels

This is possibly one of my most favorite Disney moments. Here is a short clip from Disney's 1963 classic The Sword in the Stone. There is such a play on emotion in this short segment and I relate to it every time. It is really amazing how these guys figured out all of these tricks decades before anyone else.

double g studios - T4 Idents

You need to get me one of these costumes right now! I love the way each robot moves and interacts with the 3-D logo. Awesome work from double g studios for client T4.

It's a hard knock life... for bunnies

If you havn't seen Martin Rosen's 1978 animated film 'Watership Down' then I would recomend that you go see it, but be forewarned that this is in no way a movie for kids and that by the end you will probably want to cry for a solid year. I appreciate whoever put this video together.

Freelance Whales - Enzymes

Quit another stellar music video from vimeo. The most impressive part about this one is that most of the imagery is just slow-motion video capture.

Mythfits - Poo and Screw getting it on...?

Oh my, the newest installment of Mythfits is rather saucy if you ask me.

Roxie Vizcarra Illustration

Thanks to Drawn, I came across this awesome artist today. Her work really reminds me of Nathan Fox even though this artist clearly operates differently. I really enjoy her work and have found that I like her blog better than her professional site, so that's what I linked to. Roxie Vizcarra

Beirut - Cheap Magic Inside

This is one of those things that i just couldn't stop watching. The music and scenery is so beautiful and well planned. The only thing that could make this video better is if it was all actually just one shot. That aside, I loved the transitions and the mood this piece put me in. If you have a spare hour or are one of those magical people who can work and watch videos at the same time, definitely watch this one until the end.

Want

A wonderful shirt from Don Hertzfeldt. I'm a medium (hint hint)....

Dear Therop Van Orman, You have my attention....

Words cannot describe my excitement at this possibility.

Bill Murray

A man of many hats...

Something Old

Though I'm interested in all of this new media that is constantly being produced in today's world, it's always nice to take a look back at some of the gems in history. This being one of the most beautiful animations ever is quite an impressive feat for the early 20th century animator Winsor McCay. It is definitely safe to say that this guy was way before his time. A strange attraction

I was strangely drawn to this video today. At first it was the music that snared me and then the über hipster visuals did their job and drew me in further. Before I knew it, I had watched the whole video. Sometimes I am just so affected.

Also, check out the bands creepy website, Oh Land

The Aston Shuffle - Your Love

This stellar music video, directed by Maxime Bruneel from RUFFMERCY, utilizes simplistic imagery and bold compositions to create an awesome visual companion to the equally simplistic and bold music of The Aston Shuffle. I personally cannot wait to hear the rest of this album.

This video just makes you want to project it onto a movie screen size wall and dance until you die.

re re re-vamp

Yet again I have decided to change the content of this blog... these are now the things that I like/small things that I am working on. A chronological compendium of my 'finished' animation projects can be found at www.WhereThingsGoToDie.blogspot.com and my website is perpetually under construction so don't go there unless you have a desire to look at a crappy website.

To kick things off in the right direction, here is an animation that I just cannot stop watching by Ryan J Woodward
